How to Make and Use a Hoe in Minecraft

A hoe is an important tool in Minecraft that allows players to till soil for farming. With just a few resources, you can craft and use a hoe to prepare farmland to plant crops like wheat, carrots and potatoes.

Hoes are also handy for breaking plants faster than you can by hand. They can even be enchanted to last longer between repairs. This guide will cover how to make wooden, stone and iron hoes in Minecraft along with tips for using and repairing them.

Making a Wooden Hoe

The most basic hoe in Minecraft is the wooden hoe. To make a wooden hoe you will need:

  • 2 wood planks of any type (oak, birch, etc.)
  • 2 sticks

Arrange the 2 wood planks and 2 sticks in a crafting table or grid in the following pattern:

This will craft 1 wooden hoe that you can move to your inventory. The wooden hoe can be crafted from any type of wood plank such as oak, birch, acacia, etc.

Creating a Stone Hoe

To create a stone hoe in Minecraft, you will need the following materials:

  • 2 sticks
  • 2 cobblestone

Cobblestone is obtained by mining stone blocks with a pickaxe (see https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Cobblestone). Sticks can be easily crafted from wooden planks.

Once you have the required materials, arrange the 2 sticks and 2 cobblestone in a T shape in the 3x3 crafting grid. The sticks should be in the middle column vertically, with the cobblestone in the top and middle rows horizontally (see https://tekkitlite.fandom.com/wiki/Stone_Hoe/Recipe). This will output a stone hoe that you can equip and use!

Crafting an Iron Hoe

To craft an iron hoe in Minecraft, you will need:

  • 2 iron ingots
  • 2 sticks

Iron ingots are obtained by smelting iron ore in a furnace using coal or charcoal as fuel. Iron ore can be found underground in caves and mineshafts. Make sure to have a stone or iron pickaxe to mine the iron ore.

Arrange the 2 sticks and 2 iron ingots in a T shape in a 3x3 crafting grid. Place the sticks in the middle row vertically. Put the iron ingots above and below the sticks in the middle column. This will create an iron hoe which you can then move to your inventory.

According to http://minecraftsavant.weebly.com/crafting-recipes.html, the iron hoe recipe requires:

  • 2 Sticks
  • 2 Iron Ingots

Using and Repairing Your Hoe

Once you have crafted a hoe, you can use it to till grass and dirt blocks into farmland. Simply right click on a grass or dirt block while holding the hoe in your hand to transform it into farmland. Farmland allows you to plant seeds like wheat, carrots, potatoes, etc. It appears darker and more pixelated than regular dirt.

In addition to farming, hoes are useful for breaking plants, leaves, vines, hay bales, and more much faster than using your hand. Hoes can break these types of blocks instantly.

Hoes also have durability and will eventually break after extended use. Wooden hoes have low durability and will break quickly. Stone hoes last longer and iron hoes have the highest durability. To repair a hoe, you can combine two damaged ones of the same material in a crafting grid. This repairs them a bit. You can also add enchantments to hoes to increase their durability and efficiency when repairing them on an anvil.
